Howdy!

Bonjour! Halo! Olá! Guten Tag! Ciao! Aloha!  Thank you for visiting my page!

My name is Thomas Cummings and I am the school counselor for Maple Hill Elementary School.  It is my privilege to be at Maple Hill Elementary School!  My office door is always opened for any student to drop by whether to say hello, share a cool story about what they did over the weekend, to receive positive reinforcement of how awesome they truly are, or to give me a great big high five.  A few of my many responsibilities is to assist students with social/emotional development, academics, and coping strategies.  Throughout the school year I perform developmental guidance lessons with students to assist their understanding of the world through positive choice making, understanding of complicated life situations, and how to decide better ways of approaching moments that make us frustrated.

I'm also in charge of the Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) program at Maple Hill.  The Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) program is an approach for establishing a positive learning culture and individualized behavior supports needed for schools to be effective learning environments for all students.  Data shows that schools implementing PBIS with fidelity see an in attendance, a more positive and calm environment, reduced behavioral disruptions, and student achievement.  Our PBIS program otherwise known as the 5 Bee Program at Maple Hill is wildly successful and the students have a fantastic time participating in the program.

The best way to contact me is via email at thomas.cummings@naugatuck.k12.ct.us.  I may also be reached at the school telephone number, 203-720-5236 ex 7030.

About Mr. CummingsI'm driving our boat

I decided to become a school counselor for the celebrity status, of course!  All kidding aside, I pursued a career in school counseling because I wanted to assist students during the school-age years.  I wanted to be the ear that a student needed to bend as they attempt to navigate new experiences in their lives academically or socially.  When I was in my elementary and secondary academic career, I was driven to help others.  This drive has transcended through the years and is the reason for who I am today.  I have worked at the high and middle school levels with success, but I have found the elementary level to be the most rewarding.  I truly enjoy counseling at the elementary level because it allows me to use a more unique approach to building relationships with the students.  Maple Hill Elementary School is wonderful because we are the place where the next astronauts, police officers, firefighters, doctors, EMTs, teachers, mayors, and presidents of the United States will commence their academics!
